J.B Hunt Transport Services Inc.

Consistently recognized as one of the "Top 100 Military Friendly Employers" by G.I. Jobs Magazine, J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. has hired and supported the nation's veterans for many years. J.B Hunt has seen the correlation between selecting highly qualified veterans and the success of their company. Also they have a policy to offer extended benefits for those employees called to active duty, including make-whole pay.

J.B. Hunt is one of the largest transportation logistics companies in North America, providing transportation services to customers throughout the continental United States, Canada and Mexico. They were incorporated in Arkansas on Aug. 10, 1961, and have been a publicly held company since 1983 with annual revenues of more than $2 billion. The company employs over 16,000 employees and operates almost 11,000 trucks and approximately 47,000 containers and trailers. 17 percent, over 2700, of those employed are veterans.

J.B. Hunt’s service offerings include transportation of full truckload freight, which are directly transported utilizing company-controlled revenue equipment and company drivers or independent contractors. They also have arrangements with most of the major North American rail carriers to transport truckload freight in containers and trailers.

As the founder of J.B. Hunt was an Army veteran, the company is committed to providing many career opportunities for current and former members of military service. J.B. Hunt utilizes a variety of recruiting strategies to bring together members of the military community with rewarding and challenging career opportunities at more than 300 office locations across America.

Military employees often have indispensable skills and technical know-how they have learned through their service, and they are a distinct group with integrity and a strong work ethic. Those specific skills are perfect for the management training programs available at J.B. Hunt.

“Those jobs require critical thinking skills, technical savvy, leadership skills, and are process driven, and military employees have been exposed to that already,” said Eric Airola, the Director of Human Resources at J.B. Hunt.

As the advocate for veterans in Texas, the Texas Veterans Commission reached out to J.B. Hunt as a result of their track record in hiring veterans. Kevin Smith, Texas Veterans Commission Business Outreach Coordinator, contacted David Martin, Senior Human Resource Manager at J.B. Hunt, to see if there were any openings for which a Texas veteran might be a perfect candidate.

Mr. Martin had not heard of the Texas Veterans Commission before, and Mr. Smith reassured him that not only are the employment services free, but the Texas Veterans Commission Employment Services has the ability to send prescreened, qualified candidates directly to J.B. Hunt for review. Mr. Martin gave Mr. Smith a list of qualifications as well as a typing test to be administered in the field to get the ball rolling for the positions available in the management training program.

“[Texas Veterans Commission] is one step ahead of the curve, especially with the typing test,” Mr. Martin said.

Mr. Smith sent out the qualifications to the veterans employment representatives in the field and began receiving resumes from the VERs soon after. Mr. Smith examined every resume and forwarded those on to Mr. Martin.

After seeing the quality of service from Mr. Smith and the Texas Veterans Commission Employment Services, Mr. Martin and Mr. Airola are eager to utilize those services from now on.

“This is a partnership that we are excited about,” Mr. Airola said.
